Introduction

"Me earliest recollection"

From his book 'Scunnered'

Don't Leave Me Here To Vegetate!

Me earliest recollection
is the smell of rottin' cabbage
-apparently the compost heap
at the rear of our old garage
where mum would often put me
when at her tether's end
and, once, I got to stay there
throughout a whole weekend.

She said I bawled and grizzled
from sunup through to dusk;
and once she'd had enough she'd stuff me
with a Farley's rusk
and strap me in me old blue pram
and rush me to that spot,
and leave me there to squeal and squawk
-and watch the cabbage rot.
