Introduction
The
thoughts of a long term church attender!
If
Jesus Could See Me Now
Sunday morning,
washed and brushed; suit on, all neatly pressed,
I make my way to worship; I hope you are impressed!
I've got my Sunday Bible; I like the old "AV",
If it was good enough for Paul, it's good enough for me!
My neighbours
see me leaving, for I make sure they do;
God's called us to be witnesses, yes, me as well as you!
I'm never late for services, so I stand around a while
Chatting with my Christian friends, exchanging nod and smile.
I like to take
a central seat so everyone can see
That there aren't many others that can worship God like me.
I like to say a loud "Amen" whenever I agree
With what the preacher's saying; that's scriptural, you see.
And when the
offering is made, and the bag or plate comes round,
I drop in lot's of noisy change as notes don't make a sound!
Once the worship's finished, I'm always last to go,
For I browse along the notice board, and view the books on show.
Just once on
Sunday, usually, is quite enough for me,
Except at anniversaries, or when they have a tea.
I never go to mid-week prayers or any Bible study,
I think they are "old hat" these days, and rather fuddy-duddy.
Besides, I've
been attending so many years, somehow,
I feel there is no more to learn. I know it all by now.
I would have led some meetings, but they never thought to ask;
They always have their favourites that they choose for every task.
Our minister
is a problem, with all his plans and schemes;
But he is young, when he's my age he won't have any dreams.
They all start out as keen as him, but it's never very long
Before they settle down, and see that they have got it wrong!
I'm sad the
church is in decline, and people stay away;
It shows they've no commitment, that's what I always say.
Nor will the church start growing, I'm sure you will agree,
Until it has more members who give support, like me!
