Introduction
The
Sydney Morning Herald newspaper ran a story that the British police force
had appointed a poet to follow the duties of policeman, and write up their
activities. The paper invited readers to suggest a poem. This was mine,
but I submitted it too late for publication.
The
Poet Policeman
All hail to
the poetical copper
A rhymer of words and a mighty crime stopper
The bard in
the blue out patrolling the street
Always providing a rhyme on the beat
Nothing can
rival the great crime defeater
But just you watch out 'cause he might check your meter
Whether its
murder or you've lost your purse
He will track down the culprit, and do it in verse
He might pull
you over but abstain from violence
While asking to look at your artistic license
From haiku
to sonnet, he surely ain't dim, Eric
But if it is needed he'll drop in a limerick
So shout hip
hooray and please give us more sir
We are all mighty glad for the 'lore' enforcer
