The Vegie Garden

He'd purchased a lovely new rotary hoe
all shining and red, a delight
And started in ploughing the virgin soil
working from morning till night
Untiring he worked through the heat of the day
never sparing himself for a minute
Raking it over and patting it down
with plenty of chook manure in it

At last it was ready the seeds were all sown
and watered each morning and night
A scarecrow was added and rattling things
to make sure the birds got a fright
Each day he inspected it proudly and long
for the first little seedlings to sprout
The prize winning vegies his plot would produce
was never a matter of doubt

And true to his word in a matter of weeks
we were up to our elbows in caulies and leeks
We had onions and carrots and cabbages too
'twas a pleasure to see how those vegetables grew
But the news of this bounty was somehow conveyed
to all of God's creatures who came there and stayed

Every creeping and crawling and flying thing too
only weeds were left standing that they didn't chew
No spray would deter them in their gluttenous feast
after spraying for hours not a one was deceased
Overnight well fed insects to others gave birth
The meek and the mild who'll inherit the earth

So if anyone out there might have it in mind
to start their own garden; the vegetable kind
If you 're serious about it and wish to dig deep
We've a good rotary hoe that is going quite cheap.
